Latino geometric abstractions at Fundacion Juan March, Madrid

Cold America: Geometric Abstraction in Latin America (1934--1973): 11 Feb. - 15 May. Fundacion Juan March, Madrid hosts about 300 works--paintings, photography, sculpture and architecture:70 artists from Cuba, Venezuela, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Uruguay.

The exhibit underscores the complicated history of geometric abstraction in Latin America, featuring works by two key players of the period: Jesus Rafael Soto and Joaquin Torres Garcia. Osbel Suarez curates the show, collaborating with Ferreira Gullar, Cesar Patemosto, Luis Perez Oramas, Gabriel Perez Barreiro, Maria Amalia Garcia and Michael Nungesser.

Mexican sculptor Leonardo Nierman donates 3-plus metre-high work to US airport: Nierman's 10-foot high "Sensacion de Vuelo" (Sensation of Flight) is the first major work received by Lambert Airport's (St. Louis, Missouri) new Art and Culture Project. Sensacion is made of polished steel.


Mexico: Expected/Unexpected: 5 Feb. - 15 May. This is the show's US debut in San Diego, CA at  the Museum of Contemporary Art-La Jolla. The exhibition originated in 2008 at La Maison Rouge, Paris and then toured Europe.

In addition, 100 works from the Isabel and Augustin Coppel Collection will be displayed. A companion exhibit continues at MoLAA in Long Beach, CA.
