ArtTraveler digests happenings affecting Spanish & Latino artists



Salvador Dali, Suzhou Art Gallery, Jiangsu Province, China. The People's Daily reports 100 Dali prints and 10 of his sculptures last week went on show in east China's Jiangsu Province, in Suzhou at the new Suzhou Art Gallery.

Spanish & Latin American Viva Film Festival at Manchester, UK: 4 - 27 March. Manchester's Cornerhouse on Friday, 4 March opens the 17th annual film fiesta with a screening of Arrancame la Vida ("Tear This Heart Out," Mexico 2008) by Colombian artist Oscar Munoz.

Others include: Los Colores de la Montana ("The Colours of the Mountain," Colombia 2009); 80 Eguenean ("For 80 Days," Spain 2009); Gordos ("Fat People," Spain 2009); Ilusiones Opticas, ("Optical Illusions," Chile 2009); Los Pecados de Mi Padres ("The Sins of My Father," Argentina/Colombia 2009).

Artist Munoz also provides a solo show, a video installation, Biografias (2002) and Linea del Destino ("Line of Destiny"). His work explores themes of memory and loss within Colombia's socio-political turmoil.

"Beyond the Erotic: From the Collection of Milagros Maldonado" in Miami. Continuing through 30 June: paintings, photographs, drawings, mixed-media and sculptures by 20th C. masters including: Wilfredo Lam, Man Ray and Roberto Matta at Maldonado's newly reformed, 25,000 square-foot Dorissa Building in Miami.

Chaos and Classicism: Art in France, Italy, German, and Spain, 1918 - 1936, Guggenheim Bilbao Museum, continuing.

Return to order underscores the exhibition's theme. Its curators include: New York University professor of modern art, Kenneth E. Silver; Helen Hsu, assistant curator, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and Vivan Greene, curator of 19th to early 20th Century Art at the Solomon.

Michael Horse, opening & reception: 4 March, Sedona, Arizona. Michael Horse, who made his name as an actor in "Twin Peaks," has worked as painter and jewellery artist most his life, part of a family tradition. He opens 4 March at the Turquoise Tortoise Gallery, Sedona, Az.

Afro-Colombian artist & activist, Julio Cesar Montano, Colombia, spoke 24 Feb. at Quinby House on the campus of Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Masryland, about his arts activism that drew death threats prompting him to move to the US in 2005.

Montano is a painter, poet, folklore instrument maker, dancer and sculptor.

Adriana Varejao's wall-sized tile work in which Varejao remembered Lucio Fontana's slashed canvases, "Wall With Incisions a la Fontana II," sold at Christie's recently for $1.7 million, more than three times its high estimate. The work had premiered at Victoria Miro Gallery in London in 2002.

6 Sales of Madrid buys world rights outside Spain to "Wrinkles." Set in a nursing home, the film continues drawing critical acclaim, the work of Spanish storyboard artist and animator, Ignacio Ferraras, his first feature-length film. Perro Verde's Manuel Cristobal produced it.
