Southern hemisphere´s largest art fair opens today, 6 April in México City

"De la serie, Inhuman Sculptures, 2011" by Mathieu Briand

Zona México Arte Contemporaneo, México City: 6 – 10 April.

In it´s eighth reincarnation opening 6 April in México City, Zona México Arte Contemporaneo (Zona Maco)  continues its tradition emphasizing works by emerging artists, about 1,000 of them and their 111 galleries from 19 countries.

Last year, Zona Maco fielded about 900 artists and attracted 96 galleries from19 countries.

Rebounding from disappointing 2009 fair sales, organizers hope to ride the current high tide of global Latin American art sales while the heat is on.

Last year´s fair offered about 25,000 viewers art priced at between $500 and $500,000 US, and galleries reported much better sales.

Breakdown of pedigree galleries (older than five years) by country: México, 36; Spain, 13; Germany and USA, each 6; France, 5; Italy, 4; Brazil, 3; UK and Austria, each 2, and one each from Sweden, Portugal, Chile, Denmark and Japan.

In Zonamaco Sur (South) there are 23 solo exhibitions.

Mexico dominates with 13;  Brazil showcases 8, each from different galleries.

Other countries represented include Spain, Peru, Romania, Argentina, Colombia and the United States.

Zelika Garcia, Zonamaco´s director

To spice up Zona Maco this year, director Zelika Garcia incorporates Chilango Arte Urbano, inviting and judging urban muralists who will attack seven different walls located throughout Mexico City.

The fair´s landscape changes by adding Leipzig and Berlin-based Eigen + Art and Japan´s Taka Ishii Galleries.

Another first: Zona Maco hosts furniture and interior designers in a special space, eight from México, one from north of the border.

Here´s a small sampling of what an expected 30,000 people will see at Mexico´s premiere art fair, images courtesy of Zonamaco and respective artists and their galleries.

Rock on practice peace and love.
