British contemporary artist Hew Locke once abandoned color for three years early in his career.

Wikipedia reports, “Locke felt dogged in his early career by misreading of his work.”

The artist is quoted as saying: “It was seen as being from a folk tradition, not as being of its own tradition, true to itself – as art basically…stopped making work in color for three years. I just dropped it.”

That is ancient history.

A colorful array of about 100 boats of all kinds and shapes, an installation at the FolkestoneTriennial at the Kent seaside town.

It closes 25 September.

It opened 25 June, inviting 19 artists to show works throughout the town, a walk-about, free exhibition. Andrea Schlicker curated the event.

FolkestoneTriennial commissioned Locke to create “For Those in Peril On the Sea 2011,” a flotilla of vessels hanging from the walls and nave of the church of St. Mary & St. Eanswythe.

Locke and his assistants made the majority of the models in his London studio. The artist bought and refurbished others.

It´s a site-specific installation, said Paul Hedge, managing director of Hales Gallery in London.

“Folkestone is a Kent seaside town that has an active fishing fleet as well as a working and leisure boat harbor.”

Hedge added there´s nothing in the artist´s personal or family history suggesting a penchant for the sea, although Locke is known to explore historical contexts for his works.

Hedge, whose gallery exclusively represents Locke, said the artist owns “For Those in Peril Upon the Sea 2011.”

FolkestoneTriennal´s  commission in effect paid for Locke´s time, effort and materials, Hedge said.

Locke (b. 1959 Edinburgh) earned a master´s degree in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, London.

He has exhibited widely in the United States and Europe; Locke exhibited his works at Artsway’s New Forest Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale.
